Right Or Left ?

February 27, 2013

Music always takes the lead, but which hand do I use to paint with, Right (left brain) or Left (right brain)?  Simple question, but complicated answer. Growing up to be right handed was terribly important for my left handed mother; therefore, all activities with pencils, crayons, paint brushes, or eating emphasized using the right hand (left brain). It was not acceptable or normal to be left handed. There was once a stigma about being left handed. So the question is does the Music take me left or right?

My parents encouraged the sciences, (left brain).  I received my first chemistry set at the age of five : chemical reactions, mathematics, and calculations were second nature to me. Learning to make and mix inks was most fun for me; invisible ink was my specialty. I was truly right handed (left brain). They were right, my first degree was a Bachelors in Chemistry.

But how does a left brained - right handed person become more balanced with the right brain - left hand connection? For the past few years, I’ve been painting with my Left hand, strengthening the skills of my right brain. Painting to the beat and rhythm of music with my Left hand allows me to continue to change and heal. “I am the canvas that continues to evolve and change.” Blessings.

Music is color.

Does paint follow music or does music follow paint.  When Iva paints, she paints with music and though she loves oils it's really jazz, zydeco, and the blues.  Music is color.  Why do you think they call it THE BLUES?
Music is color and color is music and together they become art, Iva's Art.  A B-flat flies on the page, with a streak of green.  A-sharps dot orange onto the canvas as a strain of low notes wash a beautiful powder blue over a sunset.  A startling purple rush of saxophone strain...

Music Leads and Paint Follows

January 31, 2013
When I worked as Social Worker in an Adult Day Care facility, or the Employee Assistance Program, or the locked psychiatric facility; I used music to open up the communication, and art for counseling. Determined to shift the focus of my painting and heal myself. I registered for a 10 day intensive of painting with music.

Music was the key. Everyone in my family played an instrument. I played the piano, but the piano instructor kept hitting my fingers when I played a wrong note.  I quit, beca...

Outsider Art

January 24, 2013
In trying to find something to blog about, I thought I might share my Art Diary entries regarding my personal feelings about classifying myself as an Outsider Artist. After attending a workshop, 'ART Tune-UP', (June '06'), I was encouraged to explore and examine ' the categories my style fits in '. I was searching to discover where I fit, stylistically in the art world. I had many questions. But after a life changing accident (July '06'), I started considering 'Outsider Art', the best fit and...
